Bright lights of Broadway lure seven students from Sidney – Victoria News

Seven musical theater students are about to salute Broadway.

Claire Maddison, Sophie Burns, Lily Burns, Charlie Walls, Lily Edgell, Marina Hembruff and Izzy Walls from Mountain Dream Productions School of Musical Theater in Sidney are traveling to New York City over March Break, departing March 16 and returning March Break. March 22 to participate in the Broadway Student Summit, a gathering of theater students from around the world organized by the Broadway Teaching Group.

Lily Burns, 12, who has starred in more than 20 productions in her six years with the company, said in a statement that she was looking forward to making the trip.

“I’m so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to go to New York to do a lot of wonderful things with amazing people,” she said.

Rob Forbes, the school’s executive director, said students will attend 10 masterclasses from working Broadway actors and directors on musical theater skills, audition techniques and creative mindfulness, among other subjects. Students will also take the opportunity to watch four Broadway shows to get a personal feel for what it takes to make it.

Forbes said the students will use lessons learned to build on what they’ve absorbed in their Tuesdays schedule at the Mary Winspear Center, which has continued to run classes in acting, singing, dancing, staging, lighting design and stage management during the pandemic. In total, the students have even been able to edit nine shows since March 2020 – one recorded at home, one filmed as a film, two broadcast live, four with a reduced capacity audience and one with a full-size but masked audience. .

The entire cast of Mountain Dream is currently rehearsing for its production of Anastasia, the Broadway musical based on the acclaimed animated feature, which is due to hit the stage in June.

Mountain Dream Productions has been providing musical theater training to youth and adults in the Greater Victoria area for over 25 years and has operated out of the Mary Winspear Center in Sidney since 2008. Classes are held on Tuesdays.
