New solo satire ‘Clowntime’ debuts at Dance Loft on 14th St.

Playwright and performer John Feffer presents his solo show clown hour to the public live in July before a digital broadcast at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. Directed by Yury Urnov with video design by Kelly Colburn and Dylan Uremovich, clown hour imagine a world where comedy is not only king but dictator.

In the United States of the near future, everything has become a joke, not just the economy. The evening news is a comedy show. The cinemas are full of burlesque entertainment. The president is a comedian. To advance in this world, you must have a high HQ. Those with a low humor quotient are doomed to live on the margins.

Born without a sense of humor and unable to acquire one, Christopher Blank of Feffer faces very bleak prospects. However, through several setbacks of fortune, he ended up bringing down a dictatorship and saving the world.

In this world-first solo show, with full cast via video, Feffer portrays the fall and unlikely rise of a straight man in an alternate universe that’s just a joke of ours. If you want a vision of the future, warned George Orwell, imagine a boot hitting a human face, forever. clown hour offers a different but no less terrifying take on the future: a custard pie hitting a human face forever.

John feffer is the author and performer of critically acclaimed one-man shows The bird, edible Rex, and Thing. He has performed at the Capital Fringe, the New York Fringe, the One Man Standing Festival and the United Solo Festival. He received a 2016 solo performance award from the Maryland State Arts Council. He is a foreign policy expert at the Institute for Policy Studies and is the author of several fiction and non-fiction books.

His plays have received rave reviews. “As an entertainment that skillfully blends history, satire, pathos and comedy, Next stop: North Korea is an unqualified success ”, concluded The nation in 2019. “This is a charming, wonderfully written, beautifully detailed and resonant solo show that I can wholeheartedly recommend,” Christopher Henley wrote of Thing (2016) in DC Theater Scene. DC Metro Theater Arts called Examination (2015) “a skillfully told black comedy on a serious and topical subject that completely immerses the audience in its creative story”. DC Broadway World congratulated The politician (2014) as “a brilliant mix of theater and politics”. The Washington Post says that Expert (2013) “deflates its target with a sharp satirical pin”.

Yuri Urnov is the Senior Artistic Director of the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia for 2020-2021. Born in Moscow, Russia, Yury graduated from the Russian Academy of Theatrical Art (GITIS) in 2000 with an MA in Fine Arts and has since directed more than 40 productions in his home country, Europe and Africa. Her recent professional directing credits in the United States include Hedda Gabler and Ubu king at the Cutting Ball Theater in San Francisco, the Thr3e Zisters at the Salvage Vanguard Theater in Austin, Pillow man at the Forum Theater in DC, Mr. Burns, a post-electric game at the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia, Poutine on ice and One hour eighteen minutes with ACME Corporation Theater of Baltimore, and also KISS, Marie-Antoinette, and You for me for you at the Woolly Mammoth Theater in DC, where Yury has been a proud member of the company since 2014. In 2009-2011, he was a Fulbright Fellow in Residence at Towson University in Md., where he still teaches. Yury is associate director of the Center for International Theater Development in Baltimore.

Kelly colburn is a DC-based inter / multidisciplinary artist working as a director and multimedia designer for live performances. Kelly is the digital producer and director of photography for the digital season of Theater Alliance and the artistic director for the theater at Flying V. Kelly received a 2019 Helen Hayes Award for her work on Blood at the root with Theater Alliance, was a 2017-2018 NextLOOK resident and 2018 Jim Henson Puppetry Fellowship recipient.

Dylan Ouremovich is a lighting and multimedia designer for live performances and installations, based in Washington, DC. He received his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Maryland, focusing his studies on lighting and multimedia design.
