And so, STC’s music and theater departments begin their journey to their home performances of Into the Woods at the Wieting Theater on Thursday, Friday and Saturday November 4, 5 and 6, then pack and move the set, props. , the cast and crew for the Friday November 12th stage performance at the Iowa Thespian Festival, held at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) on the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center stage. To be chosen as the main stage at the Iowa Thespian Festival is an honor. The cast and crew will be selected for a performance slot at the International Thespian Festival, to be held at its new site at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.

Into the Woods combines five fairy tales from Brother Grimm: “Cinderella,” “Jacques and the beanstalk,” “The baker and his wife”, “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “Rapunzel. “ The first act weaves these stories together as the characters persevere to make their dreams and wishes come true as well as ultimately live. “Happy forever.” While all of the characters believe they have achieved their goals of happiness forever by the end of Act I, Act II brings them all back to reality, where they discover that not all that glitters is gold. or that having it doesn’t necessarily bring happiness. .

Rehearsals began on August 16-17 with read-thrus with rehearsals for the next three weeks focusing on learning music. Blocking rehearsals began at the Wieting Theater on September 13.

Producing any musical is a challenge; but taking him down the road to the Iowa Thespian Festival meets the challenge exponentially. In addition to using almost 60 students in the cast and crew, there is a village of adults who are helping this musical come to life. They are: Chris McFate, Music Director; Dixie Forcht, director; Darcy Lamb, choreographer and assistant director; Shane Manfull, Technical Director; Jeff Shaw, scenographer, Ellen Moran, lighting director; Ruth Anne Kosbau, costume designer; Marla Behounek, costume assistant; Mary Fasse-Shaw, publicity; Nancy Smith, Teresa Smith and Josh Grimes, pianists.

As the actors of the musical sang, “In the woods without regret, the choice is made, the task is asked” So the cast, crew, directors, and other adults begin their journey as their task of bringing Into the Woods to life locally is set.
